Studies conducted by various agencies reveal a growing imbalance between the labour demand for qualified individuals in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and those with qualifications in these fields. This situation is all the more serious if analysed from a gender perspective, because women, despite outnumbering men in higher education, pursue studies in these areas to a lesser extent. As a result of this imbalance, at this point some jobs cannot be covered and, in the coming years, will not able to be created.
Forecasts for the future estimate that this situation is to deteriorate even further. The aim of the STEMCats initiative for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics is to promote interest in these studies, with particular emphasis on female participation.
